It happened in 1883. William McCardell and two other Canadian
Pacific Railway workers happened upon the hotsprings. To settle
land disputes and several claims of ownership that were erupting
over the new-found liquid gold, the Canadian government expropriated
the land and formed Canada's first National Park. The original
reserve, formed in 1886, was only 10 square miles. The park
has grown to become Canada's second largest National Park
(Jasper is the largest) and one of the most famous in North
America.
