Bison at Elk Island Park

ELK ISLAND PARK  |  HOME PAGE

Immersed in the rolling hills East of Edmonton, Elk Island National Park is an oasis of conservation. North American Bison (once almost extinct), can be found here in growing numbers. Bison herds around North America have been populated with stock from Alberta. The largest herd in the World is located further north at Wood Buffalo National Park. In some restaurants in nearby Edmonton you can even try bison burgers!

The Bison of Alberta used to number in the millions!  An ancient native story tells of warriors who had to wait for 2 to 3 days for a Bison herd to pass before they could continue their own journey.
Today there are more cattle in Alberta than people,
numbering close to four million, while bison still number only in the thousands.
