Dry Island Buffalo Jump

Buffalo jumps are fascinating prairie history.  Natives hundreds and possibly thousands of years ago would stampede huge herds of buffalo towards a know cliff face.  It was very dangerous work for the natives.

The Buffalo would stampede and the lead animals were smart enough to stop before going over the cliffs.  However the panicky animals behind would push and crowd forward propeling the animals closest to the cliffs over and to their deaths.

Natives would collect the carcasses at the bottom and enjoy the harvest.  Almost every part of the animal would be used and the meat would provide sustainance through the coming winter.
