The Titanic &
Mr. Charles Melville Hayes
Charles Melville Hayes was an influential man, president
of the Grand Trunk Railway. He planned to build a massive
resort, similar to the Banff Springs resort at Miette, near
Jasper. The hotsprings would provide hot water and heating
for the hotel! Chateau Miette was never started because
Charles Melville died on HMS Titanic in 1912!
Pocahontas Coal Mine
For a short but interesting walk (1mile) will find you in
the shadow of the Roche Miette Peak. Here are wonderful
views of the Athabasca Valley. The trail is lined
with interpretive signs and artifacts that relate the story
of the coal mine that operated in the area in teh early
1990's, and teh town that grew up around it. It is
quite lovely in the autumn when leaves turn gold and red.
There is a lower loop that is wheelchair accessible.
You start the walk at an eleveation of 3,300 feet and gain
a mere 100 meters on the upper loop with a negligible gain
on the lower loop.
