The views are inspiring in several directions. Take pictures
of Jasper townsite, Athabasca
River and Miette River. Looking towards the north look for
Mount Edith Cavell (a fascinating
hike as well), the Whistlers and the Jasper
Tram, the Victoria Cross Range (look for reddish quartzite),
Pyramid Mountain (it has a large satellite station on top and
sits in front of Pyramid Lake),
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge which sits majestically on the shores
of Lac Beauvert, the Colin Range (a rounded-top Signal Mountain
sits beside Mount Tekarra) and, last but not least, Mount Hardisty
with its sloping layers.
The "Old Fort Point" name comes from the first fortification
in the area which was located just downstream. There are
stairs for those in a hurry (steep stairs) or follow the wide
trail for a more leisurely trek. You start at elevation
3,378 feet and gains about 430 feet in a mile and a half.
