Patricia and Pyramid Lakes
- An easy 10 minute drive above Jasper townsite on Pyramid
Lake Road brings you to this great recreational spot. Enjoy the
two delightful lakes on the "Pyramid Bench".
A 5 kilometer trail loops along
Cottonwood slough, a lovely marsh-like area and a small creek
before swinging back around. You will pass through a montane forest
and, if traveling in July or August, no shortage of flowers.
There are lovely views of Athabasca River far below and bighorn
sheep, moose, elk, waterfowl (including loons) and beavers are
often seen. Birdwatchers be on
the lookout for hummingbirds, warblers, yellowthroats, loons and
thrushers. From the shores of Patricia Lake admire the colors
of red quartzed sandstone in Pyramid Mountain (9,000 ft). Stroll
over to the island on Pyramid Lake. Allow 2 hours for the
hike that has an elevation gain of 900 feet to about 4,200 feet
above sea level. You can start the trip in Jasper (10 mile
hike round-trip), Pyramid Lake Road, Cottonwood slough parking
lot or Pyramid Lake riding stables
Accommodation is very close as
you can stay in the popular lodge across the road from the lake.
A great view of Pyramid Mountain
and Lake is available from Old
Fort Point.
